Airport Estates-General

As mentioned above, Zaventem airport maintains a dialogue with the surrounding communities to understand their concerns about air pollution and to work together on mitigation solutions. These discussions can include meetings, public consultations, participation mechanisms and communication channels to enable residents to express their concerns and contribute to decisions made by the airport.

Airport authorities, airlines and local governments may also carry out wider consultations or environmental impact studies to assess the effects of the airport on local communities, and to gather comments and suggestions on mitigation measures.

With this in mind, Minister Gilkinet organized a “Etats-Généraux”, bringing together a whole range of stakeholders to consider what solutions could be envisaged to reduce nuisance for people living near the airport.

The content of the discussions is confidential at this stage, but the approach used is that advocated by the ICAO.

Discussions lasted for almost 2 years, ending in June 2023. The summary report of these discussions is available here (FR/NL).
